I had always wanted to do a season in a ski town.

Long before I met Kelli, I’d dreamed of disappearing into winter for months at a time.

We finally made it happen together in 2022, committing to our first proper ski trip, a month in Bansko, Bulgaria. It was our first long stay built around snow, and it didn’t take long to realise that skiing wasn’t something we wanted to squeeze in around around travel.

Since then, our winter ski trips have become a recurring and deliberate part of how we travel. Each year we set aside time for a longer winter stay, fitting it alongside van life, sail life, remote work, and the practical realities that come with living on the move as a young family.

We’ve spent months skiing in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, based ourselves in Georgia, lived through a deep winter in Hokkaido, and made Bosnia our winter base.

Snowmad life isn’t about ticking off famous resorts. It’s about finding places where long stays are possible — affordable mountain towns, reliable snow, workable visas, and the rhythms that make remote work and winter living sustainable. It’s cold apartments, early mornings, and learning to balance first chair with deadlines. It’s navigating transport to the slopes, long-term rentals, and the realities of après ski when you’re staying for months, not days.
