The park encompasses the southern end of Dugi Otok, including the Telašćica Bay, surrounding waters, and several smaller islands. This region is renowned for its unique and impressive geological features, towering cliffs, tranquil coves, and a saltwater lake.

Telašćica’s diverse ecosystem is a haven for various plant and animal species, both on land and in the sea. We saw snakes and lizards in the undergrowth of the pine forests, fish beneath the water, sea birds wheeling in the sky, and even wild donkeys.

For sailors, the well-protected anchorages, clear waters, facilities, and numerous bays make it an ideal destination for boat exploration.

Is Telašćica Nature Park Worth the Visit?

We were surprised at how much we enjoyed our short time in Telašćica. We added Telašćica to our itinerary as an afterthought; having explored the Kornati islands to the south, we decided to check out what all the fuss was about.

We found that while Telašćica was smaller than the Kornati area, it had just as much to offer in terms of natural beauty. Additionally, Telašćica is cheaper than Kornati and slightly easier to access.

So, is Telašćica Nature Park worth it? We think so. Telašćica Nature Park is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the untouched beauty of Croatia’s Adriatic coast. While it may not have the same level of fame as nearby Kornati, Telašćica offers a more tranquil and intimate experience with nature. Whether you’re sailing, hiking, or simply relaxing, Telašćica is an incredibly beautiful and somewhat underrated destination in Croatia.

Sailing to Telašćica Nature Park

Telašćica Nature Park is a popular destination for local and visiting sailors, thanks to its well-protected bay and stunning surroundings. The bay is one of the safest natural harbors in the Adriatic, making it ideal for anchoring and exploring by boat. Additionally, the park service that administers the bay provides facilities, including mooring buoys, walking trails, waste bins, and even toilets for visitors, as part of the park entry fee.

Telašćica can be visited as part of a boat tour or with a private or chartered vessel.

Telašćica Nature Park Sailing Tours

There are numerous tours that can take you on a Telašćica adventure.

Most tours depart from nearby locations such as Zadar or Sali, offering a variety of ways to explore Telašćica, often combining tours with the nearby Kornati.

• Permit Costs: Permits are priced according to the size of your vessel rather than per person. Discounts of around 50% are available during the off-season.

  • 3-day tickets start at €35 for a boat under 7 meters in the off-season.

Best Time to Sail

The best times to sail in Telašćica are during the shoulder seasons of late spring (May) and early fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is stable and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The sea conditions are also ideal for sailing.

These periods also see fewer tourists compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more peaceful experience. You’ll likely have many anchorages to yourself and can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

The peak summer months (June to August) offer warm temperatures and vibrant activities, but they are also crowded, and ticket prices are around twice as much.

Winter sailing (November to March) is less common due to cooler temperatures and unpredictable weather but can be suitable for those seeking solitude and a unique sailing experience.

Navigating Telašćica’s Waters

Navigating through Telašćica Nature Park is a straightforward experience, thanks to its calm waters and well-marked routes. Here are some tips for safe sailing in Telašćica:

Entering and Exiting

Enter and exit Telašćica Nature Park through the marked channels at the entrance of Telašćica Bay. The main entrance is between the islands of Katina and Dugi Otok. While navigation is relatively straightforward, be sure to follow the navigation markers and charts to avoid shallow areas and underwater obstacles.

Tips for Safe Sailing

• Anchor Carefully: Many of the anchorages in Telašćica are sheltered, but detailed charts and a depth sounder are essential to ensure safe anchoring. The park provides mooring buoys in some areas to protect the seabed.
• Stay Informed: Regularly check weather forecasts from reliable sources, such as the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service or local marina offices. The weather in Telašćica can be slightly more variable due to its proximity to the open sea, so vigilance is key.

• Fishing and Diving: These activities are regulated within the park to preserve marine life. Ensure you have the necessary permits and adhere to the rules to avoid fines.

Anchoring and Mooring Options

• Anchorages: Telašćica offers numerous sheltered bays ideal for anchoring. Some popular anchorages include the bays around the islands within Telašćica Bay, such as Čuška Dumboka and Tripuljak Bay.
• Park Mooring Buoys: The park provides mooring buoys to protect the seabed. These buoys are located near popular areas and are included with your park pass. Early arrival is recommended to secure a spot. We found, even in May, before the peak sailing season, that the main anchorage was full, and we had to race another boat for the last mooring buoy in Uvala Mir as it became available.

How Long Do You Need in Telašćica?

The time you need to explore Telašćica Nature Park depends on your interests and schedule; however, given its size, one or two nights is probably enough time to explore the whole area.

If you have more time, an extended stay allows for a leisurely exploration of the park and nearby areas, providing a deeper connection with the natural surroundings. A combined ticket for Telašćica and Kornati is available for those planning to see both parks in a single journey.

You can snorkel throughout the area, but diving requires a permit. Divers must adhere to park regulations to preserve the underwater environment. Diving is permitted at Garmenjak Veliki, Mali, Korotan, and Podusobine.

Fishing in Telašćica is regulated to protect the marine ecosystem. Visitors need to obtain a fishing permit from the park authorities.

The Island of Katina also has a family-run restaurant serving fresh seafood and traditional Croatian dishes.

• Kiosk—There is a small Kiosk next to the Gospoja Konoba in Uvala Mir, although its opening hours are seasonal.
• Toilets (portable toilets)—Portable toilets can be found near the Gospoja Konoba in Uvala Mir. They may not be available in the off-season.
• Bins – There are trash bins available in Uvala Mir

Remember that Telašćica is a protected area where the conservation of local flora and fauna is paramount. Please adhere to the following guidelines:
